The World

Monsters VS Monster Girls takes place on an alternate Earth, many hundreds of years into the future. Post-transformation Earth had become a largely desolate wasteland, with soot permanently covering the sky, except for small openings where sunlight may peek through. While this was in part a consequence of nuclear warfare, supernatural forces may be in play as well.

Much of Earth's geography is like it is in the real world, except destruction and supernatural deformation has made many landmarks from the 21st century unrecognizable. In addition, the peoples of these lands bear no continuity with their native peoples, as the Great Transformation also resulted in massive demographic displacement that appears to have been largely random. Peoples from one side of the world found themselves in foreign lands, with no common language they could use to communicate with their new neighbors. Over time, however, this would lead to the rise of a new pidgin, called "worldspeak".

In addition to the Earth, many other realms of existence had come to begin interacting with the Earth and its denizens. Among the planes, Hell has become the most accessible for monster girls to reach, although it is still a rotten place filled with demons whose only desire is to corrupt that which is good, and to have some fun helping others indulge in sin.

The Great Transformation

"The Great Transformation", better known as "the Great Curse", is a supernatural event in Earth's history, where that which was once natural was made unnatural, and that which was created was made perverted. The animals were made into beasts, the plants were made into predators, and humanity itself were made into monsters. Even the very terrain of the Earth itself turned into improbable, grotesque shapes to reflect the new reality that would set in--a total corruption of all things living and nonliving.

While the Great Transformation is sometimes referred to as a single point in history, it is better described as a transition that was in some places gradual, while it was rapid in other places. The Great Transformation affected all places and "timelines" throughout human history, in a way that would appear to defy the laws of time; humans from the distant past, all the way into the near future, were affected. This means that people and places from the past and future were all brought, somewhat randomly, into the new, twisted "present" to witness together the end of humanity, and the world, as we know it.

The Great Transformation affected a vast majority of humanity, many worse than others. However, there were some who had not been transformed as thoroughly, and to some extent they maintain a good degree of their former appearance and personality. Even more strangely, for some reason, many more girls than boys seem to have been largely spared the worst of the transformation. These girls have come to be known as "monster girls". Former humans that did not become "monsters" are generally known as "demihumans", although in recent centuries the most numerous of the demihumans would become the monster girls, and few people really know why this is the case.

What is a "Monster Girl"?

The vast majority of humans had been transformed completely into monsters. With the appearance of angels and demons fighting over the world, it has been discovered that humans were transformed as punishment for their sins. Those humans that were irredeemably sinful and unrepentant became some of the ugliest, most grotesque, and most hateful among the monsters. Hating what they have become, the monsters have fought among each other and especially their common enemy, the "beautiful" monster girls. These monsters know little of reason or decency, becoming overwhelmed by feelings of rage, fear, disgust, and contempt towards themselves and each other.

On the other side of the coin are the monster girls--those who had not been as sinful as their monstrous counterparts. In fact, many of these demihumans were only guilty for the Original Sin, according to the forces fighting outside the Earth. Their forms have still changed and they are still debatably human, but on the other hand, they still have many monstrous strengths, abilities, and features that make them less than human. Still, because they maintain a portion of their humanity, they are still capable of kindness and good, as well as evil. Even though they look monstrous, they still maintain a portion of their beauty. Some even think that their monstrous features accentuate their beauty in exotic ways.

Monsters

The most populous intelligent being on Earth are the monsters. The majority of humans had been transformed into monsters rather than monster girls--this is because the majority of humans were guilty of many grave sins that had been committed throughout their lives, some unwittingly. These monsters are grotesque, hateful beings whose only desires are to eat, maim, and murder those that stand in their way. It is thought that monsters are not capable of doing good, except by mistake or manipulation.

While most monsters are ugly or bizarre in appearance, some monsters, such as harpies and monstrous merfolk, may be more "beautiful", although mostly by the most lenient of human standards. It's not the sort of pure, elegant beauty that comes to mind from most of natural creation, but a twisted, lustful beauty whose only purpose would be to tempt mortals to commit sins. Beautiful monsters like harpies are a small proportion of all monsters, whose hideous forms are horrifying to behold.

Monsters should be distinguished from beasts, which are unintelligent animals and other living things that were transformed to appear just as grotesque and bizarre as monsters. Beasts cannot be said to harbor any ill will towards mortals other than perhaps a desire to consume or fulfill instinctual needs.

Nearly every species of monster has a monster girl counterpart. In addition, monsters are vulnerable to further corruption that can transform them to be larger, more powerful, or into a new species of monster.

Angels

Angels are perhaps the most active beings of the world of Monsters VS Monster Girls "behind the scenes". Angels were originally created as loyal servants by God, and are the most powerful beings in existence that remain active. While they were created in the image of God, their free will and desire to be like God has caused some angels to be cast down from Heaven and left to roam Hell and the Earth. This began with Lucifer, whose actions have earned God's punishment. Now, angels who do not obey or fulfill the will of God are referred to as "fallen angels".

As beings with power beyond mortal imaginations, fallen angels on Earth had begun to create their own servants, worshipers, and earthly dominions. Those "lesser gods" who had grown powerful enough had to be countered by the ultimate power of God and his angels. They often bear familiar names drawn from traditional mythologies. The immortal servants of heavenly angels are called "archons", while the immortal servants of fallen angels are called "demons". Each angel has their own classes of demons or archons that they created which are unique to them.

While some angels are present on Earth in order to carry out their mysterious agendas, the majority of fallen angels reside in Hell, where they compete with each other for lost souls and influence, sending demon armies against enemy domains. The most powerful angel and fallen angel is Lucifer, also known as Satan, who was also declared "Steward of Hell" by God himself in Satan's own words. The most powerful heavenly angel is Michael.

Demons & Archons

Demons are beings created by fallen angels, while archons are beings created by heavenly angels. This section focuses mostly on the demons, since they are more often encountered by monster girls.

While not all demons are "evil", most certainly have malicious tendencies and desires. All demons have an inherent desire to corrupt creation to be more like themselves and indulge in sin. Supporting this desire is the fact that Hell can be a lonely place sometimes. In corrupting mortal souls, they make it more likely those souls will end up in Hell. This corruption is not only possible through the ordinary power of suggestion, but the extraordinary power of possession, as being in the very presence of a demon makes one more inclined to commit sin. Demons in general are considerably more powerful than monsters and monster girls, but less powerful than their monster girl creators.

An important distinction between archons and demons is that demons have free will, while archons are "programmed" to follow a set of instructions like robots. Archons may have "free will", but they do not have as much free will as demons. Because of free will, some demons are capable of doing good, even if evil is the easier option. That said, this is not a natural inclination for them. They are far more likely to do what appeals to their demonic tendencies rather than good.

The vast majority of demons reside in Hell, where they are the most populous "species" other than lost souls and perform specific tasks. Lucifer's demons, for example, are responsible for keeping lost souls from escaping and managing their movements. Lucifer's allies, in turn, own demons that prevent mortals from entering Hell and prevent demons from escaping (nominally, anyways). Because of a tendency towards deviance, however, demons are very poor at upholding these tasks. The vast majority of demons, acting as normal "citizens" of Hell, have broken away from their fallen angel creator and freely associate with whoever they please. These demons are often seen roaming Hell, or creating the economy of its various cities. Demons on Earth often change their appearance to remain non-conspicuous--this task now is easier than ever since most demons already have monstrous appearances.

Abomination Girls

Existing beyond the bounds of human reason and comprehension, the abomination girls represent something of a perversion of "ordinary" monster girls. These powerful beings are rare and are transformed from monster girls who have been corrupted by demons lured to their sin. Most abomination girls cannot be integrated into monster girl society--most are violently insane, antisocial, or incapable of communicating meaningfully with monster girls. Because of their power and tendencies, most are left alone, even by monsters, who fear their power. The abilities of many abomination girls include making others that behold their appearance insane, bending time and space, and seeing into the future. Some abomination girls may represent abstract concepts, but most are simply perversions of sins that they had committed. The immortal abomination girls live lonely lives, unable to make friends and perceive the world for what it is, maintaining a strange child-like innocence in their appearance and demeanor.
