Stories from the Black Woods
Return of the Lagomorphs
The First Encounter
Due to its location, the Kingdom of Heris is quite familiar with the elves and other creatures of the forest. However, nobody really knew much about humanoid creatures that would be called the 'Lagomorphs', which were just beginning to emerge from the far corners of elven lands. These unusually shaped humanoids have arrived in large numbers, looking for a place to call home and depleting the bounty of the forest with their foraging behavior.
The Peripheral Defense Force's duty is to protect the ephemeral and expanding border of the kingdom, with Captain Lissord as its leader. Due to wars with the elves which reduced their numbers, no danger was expected around the borders, and so complacency had set in. When Lissord encounters a wounded lagomorph while on patrol, everything would change for the kingdom, the lagomorphs, Lissord, and even humanity itself.
More details about the story will be shown in my Battle For Wesnoth add-on, Return of the Lagomorphs.
Down the Rabbit Hole
Rabbit-Hunting Season
At the decrepit Tower of Raltha, a small number of apprentices had lived to study there under the guidance of its founder, Raltha. Raltha was a human mage interested in a school of magic called rabbit magic, and is sometimes called the first rabbit mage. He was the first to be fascinated by the use of magic by the six-armed rabbit people, the lagomorphs, and the first to study it. The lagomorphs' natural mastery of elemental magic had perplexed him, so his goal was to unlock its mysteries and learn more about the lagomorphs himself.
With Raltha himself now long gone due to mysterious circumstances, his conveniently placed tower was discovered by a group of mages that included Melgywynn. These mages were looking for a place to study the magics they were interested in without being sanctioned for illegal magic and expelled. However, despite the wealth of knowledge collected at Raltha's Tower, few would try to read the man's ramblings. One of those mages was Melgywynn herself, who was looking to get away from her callous friends. Having seen a lagomorph fight off a mighty salamander while she was younger, she grew fascinated with the lagomorphs, which continued to be unknown to the greater human world.
Melgywynn would manage to convince her friends to set up a trap so she can study and interrogate the lagomorphs in order to learn more about them, but when this plan goes awry, it would set in motion a chase that would place Melgywynn deeper down the rabbit hole into the unknown world of the lagomorphs.
More details about the story will be shown in my Battle For Wesnoth add-on, Return of the Lagomorphs.

Life in the Shadow
Meneino is the "capital city" of the Black Woods, but few are aware of its existence, because people and information do not travel easily in the hazardous Black Woods. It is the alleged domain of the goddess herself, Ikamekomi, though she cannot be seen. This city is the last bastion of her faithful, and therefore, it is here where she is strongest. At least one member of each race indigenous to the Black Woods can be found here--even the wagomorphs, and they are all faithful to Ikamekomi.
With the emergence of creatures from the Black Woods into the material world of the living, rumors and legends about their mysterious place of origin began spreading. Naturally, this would spark a sense of imagination and adventure, and soon groups would form with the purpose of traveling to the Black Woods and returning with stories and treasure--but none of these travelers had ever returned. With the vast majority of the civilized world now fearful about traveling there, that leaves only the craziest, most courageous (or perhaps most reckless) adventurers to the task of shedding light on this world of shadow.
The only lead about this world is that most of the adventurers who never came back were last seen in the vicinity of shaded corners in some remote caves and forests throughout the known world. These are believed to be the entrances of the Black Woods, but if one thing is for certain, it's that none of these places are mapped, and nobody is telling each other about where those places are. Navigation will be difficult, and once inside the Black Woods, it might be impossible to return. But, who knows what countless treasures must exist in the Black Woods? And moreover, who knows about what knowledge is to be learned from its mysterious denizens? The hallowed path to the capital city awaits, untrodden...
